Anti-Government Russian Activist Fighting for Ukraine Killed

Ildar Dadin, a well-known anti-government activist from Russia, was killed while fighting for Ukraine. When Russia launched a full-scale war in Ukraine, Ildar took up arms to fight against Russian forces on behalf of Ukraine. He was killed in the battlefield.

Ildar was fighting with a group called the Civic Council. A spokesperson for the group told the BBC that Ildar had died, stating, "He will be remembered as a hero."

Ildar was part of the Freedom of Russia Legion, a battalion fighting against Russian forces in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine. He was killed by Russian artillery during combat. Further details regarding his death have not yet been disclosed.

Exiled Russian opposition politician Ilya Ponomarev, who was once associated with the Freedom of Russia Legion, also confirmed Ildar's death to the BBC.

Another source verified the information based on accounts from fellow fighters who were with Ildar on the battlefield. The source mentioned that they sent a message to Ildar’s phone, which remains unread.

Nearly a decade ago, Ildar became known in Russia for his unwavering commitment to peaceful anti-government protests despite severe crackdowns by the Russian authorities.

In 2014, he became the first person to be prosecuted under a new law (Article 212.1), designed to suppress anti-government protests. This law later became known as the "Dadin Law." It criminalized repeated violations of restrictive protest rules.

Ildar’s "crime" was standing on the streets of Moscow holding a banner. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. While incarcerated, he went on a hunger strike and alleged that prison guards tortured him to force him to abandon his protest. Ildar was released from prison in 2017.
