Amsterdam – Dunkin' Donuts Files for Bankruptcy
Dunkin' Donuts, the popular sweets and coffee chain, has filed for bankruptcy. The company submitted the request itself, and a court in Amsterdam has appointed a curator to explore the best possible way to continue operations.
Dunkin' Donuts currently operates around 50 locations in the Netherlands. Derk van Geel, the appointed curator, stated that the plan is to keep these stores open for the time being. He added, “The staff has been informed with a brief message, but I expect they will have many questions.” The exact number of employees affected by this situation is still unknown.
As of Tuesday afternoon, customers could still place online orders, but the curator cannot guarantee that these orders will be fulfilled. Discussions between the curator and the company's management are set to take place tomorrow.
Dunkin' Donuts is owned by the American company Inspire Brands. Last year, the Van der Valk hospitality group acquired a majority stake in the chain, aiming to expand the number of locations to 130.
However, the opposite has occurred over the past year, with around 50 stores remaining from the original 70 that were acquired. Van der Valk International was particularly interested in Dunkin' Donuts due to its appeal to younger customers, who are seen as the future hotel guests, according to commercial director Kirsten Hulscher.
