The death toll in Gaza from Israel's ongoing attacks has surpassed 42,000, with over 97,500 people injured. Gaza’s Ministry of Health released this information on Wednesday. Meanwhile, two people were killed in northern Israel due to Hezbollah rocket attacks.
The Ministry of Health reported that in the past 24 hours, 45 more people were killed, and 130 were injured in Israeli strikes on Gaza. Since Israel's indiscriminate attacks began on October 7 of last year, a total of 42,010 Palestinians have been killed, and 97,720 have been injured in Gaza.
According to an Al Jazeera report, on October 7 of last year, Hamas fighters launched an unprecedented attack on Israel's southern border, killing around 1,140 people, including 300 soldiers. They also captured approximately 240 hostages and took them to Gaza.
In response to the Hamas attacks, Israel launched relentless airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip starting that same day. In the past year, these airstrikes have killed at least 41,615 people in the territory, which has a population of 2.3 million. This means that 1 in every 55 Gazans has been killed by Israeli forces.
Among the dead are 16,756 children, marking the highest number of child fatalities in any conflict in the past two decades. Additionally, over 17,000 children have lost one or both parents.
In a related development, Reuters reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed responsibility for killing two of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s potential successors.
On Tuesday, Netanyahu's office released a video in which he claimed that Israel had killed thousands of Hezbollah members, including Nasrallah and his potential successors. However, Netanyahu did not specify the names of the possible successors, and it remains unclear who exactly he was referring to with his statement about successors.
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, meanwhile, stated that Hezbollah leader Hashem Safi al-Din was likely among the dead.
Hezbollah also reported intense fighting with Israeli forces that had entered southern Lebanon, claiming to have thwarted two Israeli attempts to advance. In addition, Hezbollah’s rocket attack on the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona resulted in the deaths of two Israeli civilians, including one woman.
