Pakistan vs England: Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique Shine with Centuries as Hosts Dominate Day One of the First Test

England's bowlers faced a grueling challenge in testing conditions as Pakistan amassed a formidable 328-4 on the opening day of the first Test match in Multan.

Pakistan has struggled recently, winning only three of their last 17 Tests, with five consecutive losses leading into this series—most notably a 2-0 defeat at home to Bangladesh under the captaincy of Shan Masood. However, Masood silenced his critics with a stunning 151 after winning the toss.

Gus Atkinson (2-70) made an early impact by dismissing Saim Ayub (4) in the fourth over, as the latter gloved a delivery down the leg side. Nonetheless, Masood and fellow centurion Abdullah Shafique (102) forged a remarkable 253-run partnership for the second wicket.

Atkinson continued to impress in his Test career by claiming his second wicket, dismissing Shafique, while the returning Jack Leach (1-61) accounted for Masood, who was caught and bowled three overs later.

Despite England's hopes of a turnaround being dashed, Babar Azam (30) and Saud Shakeel (35 not out) built a solid 61-run partnership. However, Chris Woakes (1-58) managed to claim a late wicket, trapping Babar lbw with the second new ball.

As day one concluded, Pakistan stood strong at 328-4, setting the stage for an intriguing contest ahead.
